Over the years, there have been scenes in movies so uncomfortable to watch that you had to look away. We don’t mean the awkward love scenes that come up when you’re watching with your parents. We’re talking about the scenes that make you feel weird or dirty because of how wrong or ridiculous they are. Sometimes you’ll even witness something painful which immediately creates this nightmare experience of it happening to yourself. Regardless of the scene, the best way to make it through something so awkward is to squint, hold your breath, cringe, or best of all, just look away! Here are the most awkward scenes in movies we’ve seen so far.
Team America: World Police
If you’ve watched the movie Team America: World Police, you can understand why one of the scenes would make it to our list. There is a minute and forty-five second scene of two puppets doing it in the most ridiculous positions and doing the most obscene things to one another. It started off funny, but eventually just got too awkward for most.
Amongst the many awkward scenes in American Pie, there is the one the movie is famous for and literally got it’s name from…The pie scene. Jason Biggs character, Jim, was told that touching a woman is like sticking your fingers into warm apple pie. When he gets home he sees his mom has baked an apple pie and left it on the counter. One thing leads to another and before you know it, Jim’s father walks in on him making love to a pie. Possibly one of the most uncomfortable scenes ever!
Dumb and Dumber
We’ve all been there at some point in our life. The toilet clogs, starts to overflow, and the fear begins. In Dumb and Dumber, Harry is on his first date with Mary when he desperately needs the bathroom. Because Lloyd has given him far too much laxative, Harry cannot control his bowels. He explodes on the toilet! Mary asks if he’s alright and then discomfort reaches it’s peak once she lets him know that the toilet is actually broken. He tries to fan out the room, tries to fix the toilet, but has no success. Mary has to run off suddenly leaving Harry, the true gentleman that he is, to lift the toilet and pour the contents out the window.
There’s Something About Mary
One of the most painful scenes to watch is in There’s Something About Mary. It’s prom night and Ben Stiller’s character has the hottest date, Mary. When he picks her up he uses her washroom and that’s where it starts. He zips himself up, a little too much of himself. Mary’s father goes in to the bathroom to check on him. It becomes aware to us all that he’s caught both his “franks and beans”. Mary’s mother joins in to help because she’s a dental hygienist. Eventually there is a policeman, a fireman, and an ambulance all there to assist. The painful resolution causes them to call him “a bleeder”. Of course this had to happen on prom night. This is by far the most cringe worth scene!
Philip Seymour Hoffman’s character in Boogie Nights, Scotty, makes everyone uncomfortable every time he talks to Dirk Diggler, Mark Wahlberg’s character. Scotty is so obviously in love with Dirk every moment between them is awkward. The scene that takes the cake is when Scotty tries to kiss Dirk after showing off his new car. Here we go from awkward to completely disastrous. Believe it or not, it gets even worse when they make up and hug it out. Scotty gets into his car and becomes a crying mess!
When it come to the movie Napoleon Dynamite, it’s hard to pick just one scene to add to this list. Narrowing it down to the Rex Kwon Do scene was not easy. When Kip volunteers to participate in the demonstration, he gets slapped around before being asked to sit back down. Throughout all this, Kip keeps his head low and mumbles something after every hit. This scene doesn’t necessarily make you want to look away, but you won’t be able to stop shaking your head.
40 Year Old Virgin
In 40 Year Old Virgin, Steve Carell’s character is a virgin. During a night out with the guys, having a poker night, they start to share sex stories. The guys don’t know yet that Carell’s character has never had sex so when he starts to describe his fake encounters, they sound like some sort of child-like image of what sex and the female body is like. He even describes breast’s as bags of sands. Watching him squirm through the entire conversation is ridiculous to watch.
In Borat, the whole point is for him to try to make real people both on screen and watching the film uncomfortable. During the amazing dinner scene, he tries to learn proper table manners with no success. From inappropriate dinner talk, to bringing a prostitute as his date, and even bringing a bag of his own poop to the table is more than enough to make everyone uncomfortable. It’s one of those scenes that is hard to watch but just as hard to look away.
Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds plays Colonel Hans Landa. The scene where he orders a strudel for both him and Shoshanna has us holding our breath the entire time. Earlier in the film he found Shoshanna and her family hiding under the floor boards of a milk farmers home. She managed to escape but her family did not. During their dessert, it appears he knows more then he is letting on by ordering her a glass of milk and having a discussion about cream. The final moment he says he has one more question for her. He stares at her with great intensity, keeping us all on edge until he finally says he’s forgotten his question. The scene ends and we can all breath again.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles stars John Candy and Steve Martin. One scene the wake up together snuggled close together. The awkwardness really starts to begin when Candy kisses Martin’s ear. Martin wonders why while Candy is wondering why Martin is holding his hand. The uncomfortable question of where Candy’s other hand is sets off the entire scene. Thinking he’s got his hand between two pillows, Martin assures him those are not pillows. This moment shared between the two is too awkward for us to watch, we can’t imagine how it was for them to act.
Little Miss Sunshine
One of the Little Miss Sunshine stars is Abigail Breslin. The young actress plays the role of Olive and has to put on a performance for The Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her risky and inappropriate dance routine starts with the song Superfreak playing. Her moves are full of swaying hips, slapping butts, and gets progressively worse. The crowd boo’s and even walks out. Her entire performance becomes unwatchable. Her family eventually joins her to dance on stage with the worst moves you’ve ever seen.
When Harry Met Sally
One of the most iconic scenes in film history is from When Harry Met Sally and she proves to him that women can fake an orgasm. In fact, she proves it right in the middle of the restaurant they are in. She starts to moan, squirm, yelp, scream, and even slams the table. Everyone around is starting and wondering what is going on. This would be incredibly embarrassing for anyone but does not seem to faze either of them. The awkward moment is broken with an onlooker saying “I’ll have what she’s having”.
